The Folk Gate

Downtime made fun.

Folk Gate is a Dungeons & Dragons module designed to bridge traditional tabletop play with a more flexible, always-available digital format. Instead of relying solely on in-person sessions, it integrates platforms such as Discord, Dicecloud, OwlBear, and various Discord bots to create a hybrid environment where gameplay, character management, and roleplay can all coexist in one connected space. Players can join sessions through voice or video calls, handle combat and maps through OwlBear, and roll or track their characters using Dicecloud, all without needing to physically gather in the same room.

At its core, Folk Gate rethinks how time works in a DnD campaign. In a traditional setup, the world often feels like it pauses between sessions—characters stop acting, and the story waits until everyone is available again. Folk Gate challenges that by extending the game beyond scheduled play. Through Discord channels and automated systems, players are given opportunities to continue engaging with the world during downtime. They can take on small side quests, interact with other characters through text-based roleplay, or develop personal storylines at their own pace. These activities are supported by bots that can handle simple rolls, generate prompts, or facilitate minor encounters, making the experience feel structured without requiring constant supervision.

This approach benefits both players and the Dungeon Master, though it does shift the workload in interesting ways. For players, it offers a sense of continuity and immersion. Their characters are not limited to a few hours of activity per week; instead, they exist in an ongoing world where even small actions can contribute to growth. It also allows for more personal expression, as players can explore their characters’ personalities, relationships, and backstories in a low-pressure environment outside of main sessions.

For the Dungeon Master, Folk Gate introduces a different kind of responsibility. While live sessions still require preparation and narrative direction, the persistent nature of the world means that the DM also curates systems, channels, and narrative hooks that keep players engaged between sessions. This can involve setting up automated quests, moderating roleplay spaces, or occasionally stepping in to guide interactions. It is, in a sense, a heavier initial investment, but one that can create a richer and more dynamic campaign overall.

Ultimately, Folk Gate operates on a simple but powerful idea: the game does not stop when the session ends. By using accessible digital tools and structured community spaces, it transforms DnD from a scheduled activity into a continuous experience. Players are not just participants during a session—they remain part of a living world, one that evolves through both major story arcs and the quieter, everyday moments in between.
